Des Moines, IA – Republican Party of Iowa State Chairman Matt Strawn today announced emerging national leader and House GOP Conference Chairman Mike Pence will travel to Iowa to headline a number of Cedar Rapids-area events on Friday, July 24.

The visit by Congressman Pence comes on the heels of the Republican Party of Iowa’s successful “Night of the Rising Stars” showcase last week in Des Moines that drew nearly 1,000 Republican leaders and activists. Strawn indicated this event is the next step in connecting activists statewide by hosting more regional events and introducing newer Republican leaders.

"Throughout his career in public service, Congressman Pence has been a forceful advocate for our party's principles of limited government, personal responsibility, and political, economic and religious freedom," said Strawn, adding that he anticipates this message resonating with many Iowans and Republicans.

More recently, in his new role as the third-ranking congressional Republican, Pence has been at the forefront of such issues as drafting a forceful statement of support from Congress for Iranian demonstrators to fighting the national energy tax "cap and trade" bill that would devastate Iowa's economy.

Details of the Congressman’s visit will be released on a later date.

Highlights from Congressman Pence’s official biography:
• Mike Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana, graduated from Hanover College in 1981 and earned his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in 1986.
• Pence was first elected to Congress in 2000 and was most recently elected to a fifth term in November of 2008. He also was elected unanimously by House Republicans to serve as House Republican Conference Chairman in November 2008. In his role as Conference Chairman, he helps to develop and disseminate the message of the Republican Conference and to promote its Members.
• Congressman Pence describes himself as "a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order."
• During the 109th Congress, Congressman Pence served as Chairman of the House Republican Study Committee. The Republican Study Committee is the largest caucus in the House of Representatives; membership grew to 110 House Republicans under his leadership, and has been the leading voice for advancing conservative social and economic issues in Congress since the mid-1980s.

Majority of Iowans Disapprove of Gov. Culver's Performance

Des Moines — The latest Survey USA poll indicates that more than half of all Iowans disapprove of Governor Chet Culver’s job performance. Jeff Boeyink, Executive Director of the Republican Party of Iowa, said today, “Governor Culver’s free-spending, big debt, and job-killing agenda is out of touch with Iowa values and it is reflected in job approval ratings that are the lowest of his tenure as Governor. More than half of Iowa voters now disapprove of the Governor’s job performance.”

In the June 2009 poll conducted by Survey USA, only 42% of Iowans approve of the Governor’s job performance, with more than half expressing disapproval. Independent voters are especially critical of Governor Culver, with 56% of those respondents saying they disapprove of his performance and only 35% expressing support for his work.

Boeyink continued, “Governor Culver and majority Democrats ignored the best interest of Iowans during the last legislative session and now they’re paying the price. Iowans said they were against borrowing more than a billion dollars to pay for short-term projects. Iowans also said they want a vote to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. And, Iowans say they want to keep federal deductibility. On each and every one of these issues, Governor Culver consistently ignores the will of the people.

“Iowa Republicans are ready, willing, and able to deliver on the priorities of Iowa voters and, if given an opportunity by the voters, will do so,” concluded Boeyink.
